1980 AKAI VC-65 portable color camera
This was one of Akai's first color, single tube cameras. It was released in early 1980, and had very high sensitivity for a color camera of the time. This camera was to my knowledge, not very popular, and is very rare to find now. It's very compact for a color camera from 1980, with a very slim design.
It features a 6X (C-mount) zoom lens and 1.5 inch electronic viewfinder, which has the largest viewfinder eye-piece I have ever seen. The pistol grip is removable. very light weight also, only 4.8 pounds complete with lens. There is a WB dial on the side, and WB meter. It uses a 2/3 inch "Tri-electrode" (three target) vidicon tube(HS-253), which eliminates the complex color processing circuitry, making for a smaller camera. Around 240 lines of resolution. This camera has been re-badged by hitachi, BASF, etc.
By flipping the sensitivity switch on the back, from normal to high, the camera can operate in as low as 10 foot candles. But, when you operate it in low light with the sensitivity up, the color gets very faded, because there is not enough illumination for the tube to fully produce the chroma signal. So, mostly what's left is the luminance channel, thus the picture is noticeably green.
The camera uses a non-standard(to my knowledge) 7-pin connector, which I have never seen on a VTR, and it took me a while to figure out the pin-out. This led me to acquiring the service manual, in order to find the pin-out. After figuring it out, I powered the camera up, and it worked great. Don't believe it had many hours on it.
Can someone please tell me the Akai portable VTR that this camera was meant to be used with? Thanks
